Splitting pages

Split PDF spreads: two pages from one scan

A book, script or paperback placed open on the copier – and now every PDF page shows two book pages side by side. That's awkward for reading on a tablet, printing or text recognition. Here's how to split every spread into two single pages.

Get started: open the PDF, check the split line, save the split PDF. Lossless, free, no upload.

Split spreads

Split spreads in three steps

  1. Open the PDF. Drop the scan into Split PDF Pages in Half. All pages appear as thumbnails with a dashed split line.
  2. Check. The numbers on the halves show the new page order. If the line isn't exactly at the book's centre, move the “Position of the split line” slider.
  3. Save. “Save split PDF” – 40 spreads become 80 single pages.

Nothing is uploaded. Good to know for copyrighted books or internal scripts: the tool splits the pages in your browser.

Special cases: cover, gutter, landscape

SituationSetting
First page is a single cover“Don't split the first page”
Last page is the back cover“Don't split the last page”
Some portrait pages in between“Only split landscape pages” (default)
Book placed crookedly, centre not at 50 %Move the line to e.g. 48 % or 52 %
Pages stacked instead of side by sideSplit direction “Top / Bottom”
Arabic, Hebrew or Japanese books“Right half first”

The dark shadow at the book's centre (gutter) stays visible at the inner edges. To get rid of it, nudge the line and crop the margins in a PDF editor afterwards – usually not needed for reading or printing.

Spreads in, single pages out – text and image quality stay unchanged.

Put a scanned booklet in reading order

In a stapled booklet (programme, newsletter, brochure) the pages aren't side by side in order. With 8 pages, the first sheet looks like this: outside pages 8 and 1, inside pages 2 and 7. Take the booklet apart and scan it sheet by sheet on both sides, and you get 8 | 1, 2 | 7, 6 | 3, 4 | 5.

The option “Put a scanned booklet into reading order” sorts all halves into 1, 2, 3 … 8 automatically. It needs every page to be split and the scans in the order front, back, next sheet.

Why it's lossless

The tool doesn't re-render pages. It copies every spread twice and only sets the visible area of each copy (MediaBox and CropBox). As a result:

Downside: anyone enlarging the visible area in an editor will see the other half. For confidential documents where only one half should be shared, also run the split file through Redact PDF or rasterize it.

Alternatives

Scanner software

Some copiers and book scanners can split while scanning (“book”, “separate pages”). If available, that's the most convenient way.

Adobe Acrobat Pro

Duplicate pages and crop each one with “Crop pages” – possible, but tedious with many pages.

Command line

mutool poster from MuPDF splits every page into a grid of single pages.

mutool poster -x 2 book.pdf book-single-pages.pdf

What if the book's centre isn't exactly in the middle?

The split line can be moved between 30 and 70 %.

Can I keep the cover unsplit?

Yes, with “Don't split the first page”. There's “Don't split the last page” for the back cover.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. Splitting happens entirely in your browser.

How do I reorder a scanned booklet?
