QR code size: how big should you print it?
Print it too small and the code is just a grey smudge to the camera. Too large and it eats half the layout. The right size depends on two things: how far away people stand and how much content is in the code. Here are the rule of thumb, charts and the typical mistakes.
The QR Code Generator shows the recommended minimum size for every code and exports PDFs at an exact width in millimeters.
Create a QR codeThe rule of thumb
Code width = scanning distance ÷ 10.
If the code is scanned from 30 cm (1 ft), it should be about 3 cm (1.2 in) wide. From 2 meters (6.5 ft) it needs 20 cm (8 in). For very dense codes (lots of content), go a third larger.
As an absolute minimum, about 2 × 2 cm (0.8 in) works for short content such as a link. Below that, older phone cameras and poor lighting quickly become a problem.
Chart: size by use case
| Use | Scanning distance | Recommended width |
|---|---|---|
| Business card, label | 15–25 cm | 2–2.5 cm (0.8–1 in) |
| Flyer, invoice, menu | 25–40 cm | 3–4 cm (1.2–1.6 in) |
| Table stand, A4/Letter notice | 50–100 cm | 5–10 cm (2–4 in) |
| Poster A2 / A1 | 1–2 m | 10–20 cm (4–8 in) |
| Shop window, trade show wall | 2–4 m | 20–40 cm (8–16 in) |
| Banner, vehicle | 5–10 m | 50 cm – 1 m |
Why content drives size
A QR code is made of small squares called modules. The more characters it stores, the more modules it needs – from 21 × 21 (version 1) up to 177 × 177 (version 40). At the same print size the individual modules get smaller, and the camera has to resolve finer detail.
| Content | Modules (approx.) | Minimum width (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
Short link, e.g. https://melon.tools | 25 × 25 | 2 cm |
| Wi-Fi access | 29–33 × 29–33 | 2 cm |
| Long link with tracking parameters | 41–49 × 41–49 | 2.5 cm |
| EPC payment code with reference | 37–45 × 37–45 | 2.5 cm |
| vCard with address | 61–73 × 61–73 | 3–3.5 cm |
A proven measure for the minimum size is a printed module width of at least 0.4 mm. A logo or high error correction adds even more modules. The generator shows your code’s actual module count and warns if the chosen PDF width is too small.
Tip: shorten long links first – for example to a short page on your own domain that redirects. A code with 25 instead of 49 modules can be printed at half the size.
Enter your content, choose the PDF width – the generator tells you if the code is too dense for that size.
Don’t forget the quiet zone
Every QR code needs a free margin around it, the quiet zone. The ISO/IEC 18004 standard specifies four modules. Text, lines or image edges too close to the code confuse the scanner – it can’t find the code’s boundary.
The generator includes the quiet zone by default (“Quiet zone” under “Advanced”). If you set it to 0, keep the space free in your layout yourself.
Resolution and file format
| Format | Use for | Note |
|---|---|---|
| SVG | Print shops, design software, web | Vector – scales to any size, always sharp. |
| Layouts, invoices, Word | Exactly the chosen width in millimeters; vector unless a gradient is used. | |
| PNG | Screens, slides, social media | For print, at least 300 dpi: 1024 px covers about 8.5 cm (3.4 in), 2048 px about 17 cm (6.8 in), 4096 px about 35 cm (13.6 in). |
When scaling a PNG, always scale proportionally and without smoothing. A distorted or blurry upscaled code reads worse than a smaller, sharp one.
Common printing mistakes
- Too little contrast: light grey, pastels or a code over a photo. A dark pattern on a light, calm background always works.
- Glossy surfaces: high-gloss paper, foil and glass reflect light. Print matte or make the code larger.
- Curved surfaces: on bottles and cups the code gets distorted. Use at most about a third of the circumference.
- Wrong height: hang posters with QR codes at eye level, not two meters up or just above the floor.
- Untested print: before a large print run, make a proof on the real material and scan it with several phones from the planned distance.

Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum size for a QR code?
About 2 × 2 cm (0.8 in) for short content. For lots of content (e.g. a vCard with address) rather 3 cm. What matters is that each printed module is at least about 0.4 mm wide.
How big should a QR code be on a poster?
Rule of thumb: scanning distance divided by 10. For 2 m (6.5 ft) that is about 20 cm (8 in).
What resolution do I need for print?
Ideally SVG or PDF, which are vector. For PNG at least 300 dpi – 1024 px covers about 8.5 cm (3.4 in).
What is the quiet zone?
The free margin around the code, four modules wide according to ISO/IEC 18004. Without it, scanners have a harder time finding the code.
Why is my QR code so dense?
Because it holds a lot of content. Shorten long links or use fewer contact fields – the pattern gets coarser and can be printed smaller.
Can I scale a QR code to any size?
As SVG or vector PDF, yes, without loss of quality. A PNG only up to the limit of its resolution.
