Rainbow text – how to make it and where it actually works
Rainbow text is quick to make. The real question is where it is still colorful afterwards: in Word and Gmail yes, on Instagram no. Here is which route leads where – and how to keep the text readable despite all the colors.

Four kinds of rainbow
Gradient
The colors flow smoothly into each other – from red at the start to blue at the end. Looks polished, ideal for headlines.
Letters
Each letter gets the next color: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, red … The classic playful look.
Words
Each word in one color. Much calmer and easier to read – good for whole sentences.
Random
Mixed up, but never the same color twice in a row. “Reroll” shuffles again.

Colorful but readable
A rainbow always contains light shades such as yellow and light green – and those are hard to read on white. Three tricks help:
- Dark background. On black or dark gray, every rainbow color shines. Often the nicest option for images and websites.
- Use the contrast check. The tool measures every color against the background per WCAG. Anything below 4.5:1 is flagged – “Remove” drops the faint colors.
- Go bold. Thicker strokes show more color and make lighter shades easier to read.
Think of color vision deficiency: about 8% of men and 0.5% of women of Northern European descent have trouble telling red and green apart. Never carry important information only through color – fine for a decorative rainbow, not for “red = wrong, green = right”.
Color is not a font
Many “font generators” for Instagram replace letters with look-alike symbols (𝓼𝓸 𝓸𝓻 𝕤𝕠). That changes the shape but never the color – plain text simply has no color. Screen readers also often read such symbols as gibberish, and search can’t find them. Real colors only exist where formatted text is allowed – or as an image.
