Map Puzzle: A Field Guide to Every Type
Search for "map puzzle" and you'll land on at least three unrelated things: a box of interlocking cardboard pieces, a geography app that quizzes you on capitals, and a logic game where you color countries instead of cutting them apart. They share a name and not much else. Here's what each one actually is, where the idea came from, and what the research says about whether any of it does what the puzzle boxes tend to claim.
Three Things People Mean by "Map Puzzle"
The label covers genuinely different products with different goals. Sorting out which one you're actually looking for saves you from downloading a geography quiz when what you wanted was a jigsaw, or the other way around.
Jigsaw map puzzles
A map image, printed or engraved, then cut into interlocking pieces you reassemble. Every cardboard world-map puzzle sold in a toy store, and every wooden collector's version, is this type. The challenge is spatial matching - fitting shapes back together - not geography knowledge.
Geography placement puzzles
Digital drag-and-drop games, like GeoPuzzle or classroom quiz apps, where you place countries, states, or capitals onto a blank outline from memory. There are no physical pieces - the "puzzle" is your recall, not your hands.
Map-coloring logic puzzles
A different challenge entirely. The map stays whole and uncut - you fill each region with a color so that no two neighboring regions ever match. Rooted in the four color theorem, this is the type Cartographer is built around.
Where the Map Puzzle Began
The first one was made in 1766 by John Spilsbury, a London map engraver in his late twenties. He glued a map titled "Europe divided into its kingdoms" onto a sheet of mahogany, then cut along every country border with a marquetry saw. The result was sold as a "dissected map" - a tool for children to learn geography by physically handling the borders they were supposed to memorize. Spilsbury went on to cut seven more: the World, Asia, Africa, America, England and Wales, Ireland, and Scotland.
The word "jigsaw" didn't exist yet for this purpose. It only attached to these puzzles in 1906, borrowed from the powered jigsaw tool that by then made cutting irregular interlocking shapes commercially practical. For nearly a century and a half, Spilsbury's invention was known simply as a dissected map.

Spilsbury died in 1769, only three years after his first dissected map and still in his twenties - he never saw the idea outlive him by two and a half centuries, spawn an entire toy industry, and eventually split into the three separate kinds of map puzzle described above.
Does a Map Puzzle Actually Teach You Anything?
The honest answer is: less certainly than most puzzle marketing suggests. A 2024 study built a touchscreen map puzzle and tested whether solving it before exploring a map's points of interest improved recall, compared to simply exploring the same interactive map without the puzzle step first. Across 28 participants, the puzzle condition did produce higher average scores for remembering place names and locations - but not for visual recall, and none of the differences reached statistical significance. The researchers themselves called it a direction worth pursuing further, not a settled result.
A separate 2018 study with primary-school children, using cut-up Asia and world maps, found something similarly mixed. Children were split into puzzle and no-puzzle groups, then further into individual and collaborative study, with three retention tests spread across ten days. Solving the puzzle alone showed no significant edge over simply studying the intact map. Solving it together with another child did improve retention - suggesting that whatever benefit exists may come from the collaboration and discussion the puzzle prompts, not from the cutting and reassembling itself.
Jigsaw puzzles in general have a stronger research base, just not one specific to maps. A 2018 study at Ulm University tested 100 adults aged 50 and older and found puzzle-solving skill correlated strongly with global visuospatial cognition - a correlation of r = 0.80 across perception, mental rotation, working memory, and several other measures. That's solid evidence that jigsaw puzzles exercise real cognitive skills. It just doesn't tell you whether a map, specifically, teaches you anything a puzzle of a painting wouldn't.
The map-coloring type trades that studied-but-modest geography benefit for a different kind of exercise entirely: planning and logical deduction, not memorization.
The Map-Coloring Puzzle: A Different Kind of Challenge
None of the research above touches the third type at all, because it isn't about memorizing geography or reassembling a cut-up picture. A map-coloring puzzle asks a single question of a whole, intact map: can you fill every region with one of a small set of colors so that no two regions sharing a border ever match? It sounds simple. It's actually a genuine unsolved-until-1976 problem in mathematics - the map coloring theorem, proved by Kenneth Appel and Wolfgang Haken at the University of Illinois using roughly 1,200 hours of computer time, after 124 years of failed attempts by hand.
