Multiple Hue Bridges: limits, setup and what still works
One Hue Bridge is designed for about 50 lights. Bigger homes reach that quickly – and then the question is whether to add a second bridge or switch to the Hue Bridge Pro.
How many lights a Hue Bridge handles
Philips Hue states these limits per bridge:
| Hue Bridge | Hue Bridge Pro | |
|---|---|---|
| Lights, recommended | 50 | 150+ |
| Lights, hard limit | 63 | 186 |
| Accessories (switches, sensors) | 12 | 50+ |
Above the recommended number a bridge does not stop working at once, but Philips warns that response times can slow down and lights can become unresponsive. Count every bulb, light strip and plug – a ceiling lamp with three bulbs counts three times.
Reasons for a second bridge besides the limit
- Range. Hue lights form a Zigbee mesh: every mains-powered light repeats the signal. A garage, garden house or a far end of the garden may still be out of reach. A second bridge there builds its own network.
- Dead zones. If some lights keep dropping out even after adding lights in between, Philips names a second bridge as an option.
- Separate homes. A holiday home naturally gets its own bridge.
Option 1: the Hue Bridge Pro
For most homes Philips now recommends the Bridge Pro instead of several bridges. Moving one existing bridge to an empty Bridge Pro takes everything with it. Since Hue app 5.57 (December 2025) further bridges can be migrated to the same Bridge Pro – but for those, Philips says only some content moves automatically: lights, plugs, switches and sensors do, while other settings may have to be recreated. Devices need power, must be in range of both bridges and on current software during the move.
Option 2: several bridges in one Hue “Home”
The Hue app can put several bridges into one Home. Rooms and zones of all bridges then appear together on the Home tab, and you control everything from one place. The important limits:
- Automations, switches and sensors work per bridge. A dimmer switch on bridge A cannot control lights on bridge B, and a schedule only reaches lights on its own bridge.
- Entertainment areas use lights from one bridge only.
- Voice assistants and partner apps stay linked to the first bridge unless you relink them (Apple Home is the exception).
- Rooms with the same name on two bridges are confusing – Philips recommends distinct names.
How to split a home across bridges
- Split by floor or building, not by room type. A bridge per floor keeps each mesh compact and each room complete on one bridge.
- Keep a switch on the same bridge as its lights. Otherwise the switch cannot control them.
- Place each bridge centrally in its area, not in the corner next to the router.
- Name rooms clearly (“Kitchen”, “Garden shed”) so the combined view stays readable.
Controlling several bridges from a Mac
Tamsel is a Mac app built for exactly this setup: any number of bridges, rooms grouped by floor instead of by bridge, favorites that start scenes on several bridges at once, and one maintenance view for batteries, unreachable lights and firmware of all bridges. Favorites across bridges run from the Mac; switches and automations stay on their bridge, as described above.
Tamsel: all your Hue Bridges on the Mac
Rooms by floor across every bridge, a floor plan that glows, scenes and effects, and a maintenance view with battery levels and unreachable devices. €2.99, no subscription.
Questions
How many lights can one Hue Bridge handle?
Philips recommends up to 50 lights and 12 accessories per Hue Bridge; the hard limit is 63 lights. The Hue Bridge Pro is rated for 150+ lights (hard limit 186) and 50+ accessories.
Can a Hue switch control lights on another bridge?
No. Accessories, automations and entertainment areas work per bridge. A switch can only control lights that are connected to the same bridge.
Should I buy a second bridge or a Bridge Pro?
If you only need more capacity in one building, the Bridge Pro avoids the per-bridge limits on switches and automations. A second bridge still makes sense for a separate building out of Zigbee range or for a second home.
