Hue light unreachable: causes and fixes, step by step

“Unreachable” means the bridge has lost contact with the light – not that the bulb is broken. Most cases come down to power, range or radio interference. Work through the steps in this order.

1. Check the wall switch

Hue lights need power all the time. If someone turned the light off at the wall, the bulb is simply off – the app shows it as unreachable after a while. Switch it back on and give it a moment to reconnect. A smart switch avoids this for good – for example a battery-powered Hue dimmer switch on the wall, or a Hue wall switch module behind the existing switch.

2. Power-cycle the light

Turn the light off at the switch or plug, wait about 10 seconds and turn it on again. For light strips, also check that the power supply is connected to the strip. This restarts the light’s radio and often brings it back.

3. Check the bridge

If all lights are unreachable, the problem is the bridge, not the lights. Check that its three lights are on, that the network cable sits firmly in the router, and restart the bridge by unplugging it for a few seconds.

4. Range: the light is too far away

Hue lights pass the signal on to each other (Zigbee mesh), but only lights on mains power do that – battery switches and sensors don’t relay. A light at the end of a long chain, outdoors or behind thick walls, may drop out. What helps:

5. Wi-Fi interference and the Zigbee channel

Zigbee and Wi-Fi share the 2.4 GHz band. A bridge right next to the router, or heavy Wi-Fi traffic, can disturb the lights. First move the bridge at least a little away from the router. If that is not enough, change the Zigbee channel in the bridge settings of the Hue app – it offers channels 11, 15, 20 and 25. Keep all lights switched on while the bridge changes channel, so they move with it.

Which channel is best depends on your Wi-Fi. As a rule of thumb from the frequencies: Zigbee channel k sits at 2405 + 5·(k − 11) MHz, so channel 11 is at 2405, 15 at 2425, 20 at 2450 and 25 at 2475 MHz. A 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network on channel 1 occupies roughly 2401–2423 MHz, channel 6 about 2426–2448 and channel 11 about 2451–2473 MHz. With the router on channel 1, Zigbee 20 or 25 is the safer choice; channel 11 overlaps it directly.

6. Unreachable now and then – or gone for good?

A light that drops out for a few minutes every evening points to interference or a weak spot in the mesh. A light that has been unreachable for days is usually without power, out of range or defective. The Hue app only shows the current state. Tamsel, a Mac app for Hue, keeps a history: its maintenance view lists what is unreachable right now and, separately, what has been unreachable for 14 days in a row – so you can tell flaky lights from lights that are really gone.

Questions

Why does my Hue light show as unreachable although it is on?

The light may still be lit with its last setting, but the bridge has lost contact with it. Causes are usually range, Wi-Fi interference on the 2.4 GHz band or a bridge that is offline.

Which Zigbee channel should I use for Hue?

There is no single best channel. The Hue app offers 11, 15, 20 and 25. Pick the one furthest from your Wi-Fi channel: with Wi-Fi on channel 1, Zigbee 20 or 25 overlaps least.

Do Hue lights need the wall switch to stay on?

Yes. Hue lights need constant power. A light switched off at the wall cannot be reached by the bridge and shows as unreachable.
